Judith Beatty comes from a brass banding and singing family background. Judith started playing the trombone as a child and quickly progressed playing tenor trombone, bass trombone and sackbut in brass bands, orchestras and early music ensembles until her retirement from playing in 1999. A few memorable experiences include playing 1st trombone in Gary Cutt’s all-star brass band and playing Sackbut at the York and Beverley early music festivals.

Judith is a graduate of the University of Huddersfield, majoring in conducting and composition. During her time at university she conducted both the university’s excellent orchestra and brass band (under the watchful eye of Barry Webb and Philip McCann) in both examination and concert conditions.

Judith’s conducting career started at the age of 17 when she conducted her school orchestra and choir. Her favourite orchestral conducting performances include Mendelssohn’s overture Fingals Cave, Stravinsky’s Soldiers Tale and Pulcinella (with her husband Jonathan playing the trombone solo), as well as enjoyable renditions of her own works and ensemble arrangements. Judith currently conducts Shepley Band as well as various ensemble and orchestral concerts throughout the year.

As a composer, Judith’s works have been performed by professional ensembles including the Galliard Ensemble, The Smith Quartet, the Ensemble Firebird and internationally recognised contemporary trombone soloist Barry Webb, husband Jonathan Beatty, and of course Shepley Band.

Judith is currently writing a new work for the American Bandmasters Association 2011 Sousa/Ostwald Award.
